Springtime in Union Square, Manhattan, New York City. Is it possible that there’s a better place to be on a Saturday morning? Well, nope. Visiting and staying in town in NYC is always a unique and varied experience every time; like London, Paris, even DC, there’s something about being right in the mix that makes the experience special. And in NYC you get neighborhoods! Unlike boring, uniform DC.
At any rate, this blog post is about my favorite new farmer’s market bonbon: the infinitesimally small baby lettuces, arugulas, and greens.
My favorite is HUDSON VALLEY ORGANICS, Ulster County, New York, because they are good about keeping their prices to $5 for a box; it’s a tiny box, but when you compare it across the market, there’s really not a comparison.
Hudson only has three choices and then a ton of sprouts. But their quality is high, and it lasts in the ‘fridge for about a week, if you keep it in there without leaving it on the counter thoughtlessly.
I adore the supermarket sized choices at the other stalls too for viewing purposes only. In this one (see photo on your right)…the prices start at as little as $12 for four ounces and goes skyrocketing upwards. But just look at the incredible options.
And the pleasure you can get just traipsing in the spring rains “…in the city…with my love…close to the edge.” (Sorry, overcome with reveries of 1980s music by Propaganda there…Thank you Trevor Horn, thank you).
May the microgreens you seek out from the farmer’s markets in your town bring you the power you will need to live through the excruciatingly hot summer we’re all about to suffocate through.
Soak up the spring rains. They’ll cool your parched summer heart come May(!) May? Really? Should summer come so soon?
